The Word of God | Victor Tey

We believe that the King James Bible is a perfect translation of the word of God into English and it is the final authority of our church in all doctrine and practice.

Starting assumptions – won’t be addressing these questions in this sermon

  1. Why do I believe the bible is the word of God?
  2. Why do I only use the King James Version?

 The KJV-Only Spectrum

  1. Just one of many good and equal translations.
    1. tradition
    2. comfortable / familiar
  2. Most faithful translation in English but imperfect and inferior to original languages.
  3. An accurate translation and equal to originals languages.
    1. It can be written in a more modern English and still be perfect.
    2. Means there is no need to go to another language for the whole truth.
    3. Equally authoritative as the original language.
    4. Main objection is – Can a translation be perfect?
  4. An accurate translation and superior to the original languages.
    1. People must learn English to have the whole truth.
    2. Can’t be written any other way in English.

Truths about the word of God from the word of God

  1. The word of God is eternal and existed before language and writing.
    1. Psalms 119:160
    2. Titus 1:2-3
    3. John 1:1-3
    4. 1 John 5:7
    5. Objection – You need to go to the original languages to get the true word of God.
      1. Answer – What language was the word of God in before languages existed? In what language did God say, “let there be light.”?
      2. This position simple takes the word of God away from you and makes you reliant on a man.
        1. eg. Islam / Catholicism
        2. 1 John 2:18-27
  2. This word of God was spoken before it was written.
    1. Titus 1:3
    2. 2 Samuel 23:2
    3. Jeremiah 1:9
    4. Numbers 23:12
    5. Psalms 45:1
    6. Luke 1:67-70
    7. Hebrews 1:1-2
    8. 2 Peter 1:13-21
    9. Objection – Man can corrupt God’s word when speaking it.
      1. Answer – It wasn’t man speaking of his own will – it was God speaking through man.
  3. The spoken word of God was written down without error.
    1. 2 Peter 1:15
    2. Acts 1:15-20
    3. Job 19:23-24
    4. Deuteronomy 31:24
    5. Jeremiah 30:2
    6. Revelation 21:5
    7. 2 Timothy 3:15-17
    8. Objection – Only the original “writings” are inspired.
      1. Answer – The written words are inspired, but not only from the point in time of writing.  The writings were a Hebrew manifestation of the inspired, spoken word of God.
    9. Some interesting points from Paul’s epistles.
      1. 2 Peter 3:14-16
      2. Romans 16:22
      3. Galatians 6:11
    10. Objection – Men corrupted the word when it was written down and added their own ideas.
      1. Answer – This is impossible to prove and applies to any writing claiming to be divine.  But we do know:
        1. It is the will of God for us to have his word in writing.
        2. God is completely capable of having his word super-naturally penned down without error.
  4. The written word of God was copied without error.
    1. Joshua 8:30-32
    2. Deuteronomy 17:18-20
    3. Objection – Only the original was perfect, we only have copies of copies of copies which contain errors.
      1. Chinese whispers – this is a false analogy. The more verified (checked back to the original) copies that exist of a text, the more sure it becomes and the harder it is to corrupt.
      2. Answer – A copy can be perfect and in fact we have examples of scripture being a copy of an original in the word of God:
        1. Ezra 4:11
        2. Ezra 5:6
        3. Ezra 7:11
        4. Proverbs 25:1
  5. The word of God was translated perfectly.
    1. Acts 2:1-4
      1. Objection – Meaning is always lost in the translation, therefore a translation can never be perfect.
      2. Answer – What if the God is the one doing the translating?
    2. Examples in the word of God of perfect translations:
      1. Acts 21:40-22:21
      2. Genesis 42:18-23
      3. Daniel 4:1-3
      4. Jude 1:14-15
  6. The word of God is preserved for us today.
    1. Psalms 12:6-7
    2. Matthew 24:35
    3. Mark 13:31
    4. Luke 21:33
    5. Isaiah 59:21
    6. Objection – Men copied the bible so it can’t be perfect.
      1. Answer – God ensured the bible would be preserved. Just as sure as it was spoken, written, copied and translated.
  7. Examples of truths about the word of God in Jeremiah 36.
    1. How the word of God is given.
    2. How the word of God is spoken.
    3. How the word of God is written down.
    4. How the word of God is spread.
    5. How the preservation of the original writings is a non-issue.
    6. When the word of God is preached in church, people are changed.
    7. Those that reject and do not believe the word of God will face judgement.

When you read your King James Bible, don’t believe the lies from Satan that say, “Yea, hath God said…?” and make you doubt.  You can trust that what you’re reading is the perfect, inspired, inerrant, infallible word of God.
