Common Questions About Water Baptism | Victor Tey

There are many common questions (and misconceptions) regarding the baptism with water. I address a lot of these in this short sermon prior to baptising 5 believers on this blessed Saturday.

Where should we be baptized with water?

  1. Pool – summer
  2. Spa – winter
  3. Bathtub
  4. River – how I plan on doing baptisms, let’s hope no one wants to be baptized in winter =].
    1. In a day of wells and no running water a natural body of water would have been most practical

Is baptism with water required for salvation?

  1. Verses that oppose baptism for salvation
    1. 1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
      1. Does not remove sin
      2. In response to salvation
    2. 1 Corinthians 1:14-17  I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
      1. Why was paul sent NOT to baptize if it was a requirement for salvation?
    3. Matthew 3:13-17  Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
      1. Jesus was baptized but he had no sin.
      2. Jesus was baptized to fulfil all righteousness but we are not saved by works.
    4. Luke 23:39-43  And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
      1. The thief on the cross that believed was not baptized and yet was promised eternal life.
    5. Every believer before John the Baptist came was saved without baptism.

What is the significance of being baptized with water?

  1. Public testimony that is symbolic of the baptism with the Holy Ghost by Jesus Christ.
    1. Luke 3:15-17  And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
    2. Romans 6:3-7  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.
      1. v3 added to the body of Christ
      2. v4 buried into the death of Christ
      3. v5 to be raised in the likeness of Christ – 1 John 3:1-2
      4. v7 freed from the dominion of sin to walk in newness of life

Does baptism with water add you to a church?

No, a church is a physical congregation of people. Baptism of the Holy Ghost adds you to the spiritual body of Christ.

Should baptism with water be by immersion or sprinkling?

If it represents the death, burial and resurrection. Also John baptized people where there was “much water”. You wouldn’t need a body of water to sprinkle people.

Who should be baptized with water?

  1. Acts 8:35-38  Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
  2. Since it represents salvation it makes sense that only believers are baptized.

When should you get baptized?

  1. Acts 10:43-48 – The Italian Band
    1. Acts 10:43-48  To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
    2. Baptism is a commandment, hence it is part of The Great Commission (Mat 28:18-20)
  2. 7 other instances of believers baptized immediately
    1. Acts 2:37-41 – Jews at Pentecost
    2. Acts 8:9-13 – Simon the Sorcerer
    3. Acts 8:36-39 – The Ethiopian Eunuch
    4. Acts 9:1-18 – Paul baptized max 3 days later depending on when you believe he got saved
    5. Acts 16:14-15 – Lydia
    6. Acts 16:27-34 – Philippian Jailer
  3. Why do churches delay baptism? – baptism does not represent:
    1. Your knowledge of the faith – should not need to sit through a 20 week class.
    2. Your commitment to a church – should not need to vow to keep the commandments of men.
    3. Your willingness to live right – you should not have to prove your worthiness by works.
    4. Your age – you should not have to wait until you’re “old enough” to be baptized if you are saved now.
      1. I don’t believe in having an age limit.
      2. I would like some assurance that the child being baptized understands and believes

Is my baptism valid?

A valid baptism in my opinion is:

  1. You were saved and immersed.
  2. It should not be based on who baptized you.
    1. How can you prove they are saved?
    2. How can you prove they are legitimately ordained?
    3. How can you prove their spiritual or baptistic “lineage”.
  3. But, why would I want to be knowingly baptized contrary to biblical example?
  4. The real issue is, have you obeyed the Lord in good conscience by being baptized with water and having that outward testimony?
    1. Some churches will not baptize you again even if you believe you have not been scripturally baptized.
    2. I leave that judgement up to you and your conscience to decide if you have been baptized according to scripture.
    3. Once you remove all the “perks” that come with baptism (ie. breaking of bread and church membership, voting), the “validity” becomes irrelevant and it just boils down to an issue of your obedience to God to have that public testimony.
