Challenging Jehovah’s False Witnesses | Victor Tey

In this sermon I share a few verses and points that I hope will help you the next time you need to speak with a Jehovah’s Witness and challenge them on their doctrines. There is a link to the keynote on the blog post in Pages as well as PowerPoint format.

Good principles to apply to soul-winning

  1. How you speak can change someone’s response.
    1. Proverbs 15:1-2 – soft answer, the wise useth knowledge aright
      1. Be nice – you catch more bees with honey
      2. There’s a right and wrong way to use knowledge.
    2. 2 Timothy 2:24-25 – gentleness, patience and meekness
    3. 1 Peter 3:15 – meekness and fear
    4. Philippians 2:5-8 – equal with God, made himself of no reputation
      1. meekness is not weakness, it is power under control
  2. Love should drive you, not contention
    1. Philippians 1:15-18
    2. Is the motive contention or sincerity, good will and love?
    3. We’re glad the gospel is atleast being preached but let’s do all we can to make sure we’re doing it the right way.
    4. James 4:6 – Don’t be proud. I don’t want the Spirit of God resisting me.
  3. My Method
    1. Control the conversation and stay on the spiritual attack
      1. Soul-winning is a spiritual fight and the one that is on the attack is usually in the better position.
        1. Ephesians 6:10-12 – we wrestle
        2. Matthew 10:16 – wise serpents
        3. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 – our weapons are not fleshly (pride, insults, frowardness)
        4. 1 Timothy 6:11-12 – fight the good fight
        5. Romans 12:17-21 – overcome evil with good
      2. Stay on the topics that you know they have problems defending and try to stay off their pet topics that are less important.
      3. eg. Our opening question is “do you know for sure you will go to heaven?”, just accept their position for now to discuss the bigger problems with their religion.
      4. Get them to explain problem verses first.
    2. Show them verses from the NWT that contradict their views – this takes the bible translation issue out of the picture for now and can be dealt with later.

Salvation by Grace Eph 2:8-9, Ga 2:16, Ro 3:20,28 4:1-6, 11:6, Php 3:9, Tit 3:4-7

Ephesians 2:8-9 NWT 2013
8  By this undeserved kindness you have been saved through faith, and this is not of your own doing; rather, it is God’s gift.
9 No, it is not a result of works, so that no one should have grounds for boasting.

Galatians 2:16 NWT 2013
16 recognize that a man is declared righteous, not by works of law, but only through faith in Jesus Christ. So we have put our faith in Christ Jesus, so that we may be declared righteous by faith in Christ and not by works of law, for no one will be declared righteous by works of law.

Romans 3:20 NWT 2013
Therefore, no one will be declared righteous before him by works of law, for by law comes the accurate knowledge of sin.

Romans 3:28 NWT 2013
For we consider that a man is declared righteous by faith apart from works of law.

Romans 4:1-6 NWT 2013
1 That being so, what will we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh?
2 For instance, if Abraham was declared righteous as a result of works, he would have reason to boast, but not with God.

3  For what does the scripture say? “Abraham put faith in Jehovah,* and it was counted to him as righteousness.”
4 Now to the man who works, his pay is not counted as an undeserved kindness but as something owed to him.

5  On the other hand, to the man who does not work but puts faith in the One who declares the ungodly one righteous, his faith is counted as righteousness.
6 Just as David also speaks of the happiness of the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

Romans 11:5-6 NWT 2013
5 So in the same way, at the present time also, there is a remnant according to a choosing through undeserved kindness.
6 Now if it is by undeserved kindness, it is no longer through works; otherwise, the undeserved kindness would no longer be undeserved kindness.
6  Now if it is by undeserved kindness, it is no longer through works; otherwise, the undeserved kindness would no longer be undeserved kindness.

Philippians 3:9 NWT 2013
9 and be found in union with him, not because of my own righteousness from following the Law, but because of the righteousness that is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith.

Titus 3:4-7 NWT 2013
4  However, when the kindness of our Savior, God, and his love for mankind were manifested
5 (not because of any righteous works we had done, but because of his own mercy), he saved us by means of the bath that brought us to life and by making us new by holy spirit.

6  He poured this spirit out richly on us through Jesus Christ our Savior,
7 so that after being declared righteous through the undeserved kindness of that one, we might become heirs according to a hope of everlasting life.

Name of God Isa 9:6, Php 2:9-11

Psalms 83:18 KJV
That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.

Psalms 83:18 NWT 2013
May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.

Isaiah 9:6 NWT 2013
6 For a child has been born to us, A son has been given to us; And the rulership will rest on his shoulder. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Philippians 2:9-11 NWT 2013
9  For this very reason, God exalted him to a superior position and kindly gave him the name that is above every other name,
10 so that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend—of those in heaven and those on earth and those under the ground—

11  and every tongue should openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

Bodily Resurrection Joh 2:18-22, Lu 24:36-43

Luke 24:36-43 NWT 2013
36  While they were speaking of these things, he himself stood in their midst and said to them: “May you have peace.”
37 But because they were terrified and frightened, they imagined that they were seeing a spirit.

38  So he said to them: “Why are you troubled, and why have doubts come up in your hearts?
39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones just as you see that I have.”

40  And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
41 But while they were still not believing for sheer joy and amazement, he said to them: “Do you have something there to eat?”

42  So they handed him a piece of broiled fish,
43 and he took it and ate it before their eyes.

John 2:18-22 NWT 2013
18  Therefore, in response the Jews said to him: “What sign can you show us, since you are doing these things?”
19 Jesus replied to them: “Tear down this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

20  The Jews then said: “This temple was built in 46 years, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21  But he was talking about the temple of his body.
22  When, though, he was raised up from the dead, his disciples recalled that he used to say this, and they believed the scripture and what Jesus had spoken.

Jesus is God by Implication

John 1:1 a god

Q: Who raised Christ from the dead?

Romans 10:9 NWT 2013
9  For if you publicly declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and exercise faith in your heart that God raised him up from the dead, you will be saved.

Q: Who is the only Saviour?

Isaiah 43:11 NWT 2013
11 I—I am Jehovah, and besides me there is no savior.”

Hosea 13:4 NWT 2013
But I am Jehovah your God from* the land of Egypt; You knew no God except me, And besides me there is no savior.

Titus 1:3-4 NWT 2013
3 but in his own due time, he made his word known through the preaching entrusted to me according to the command of our Savior, God;
4 to Titus, a genuine child according to the faith we share: May you have undeserved kindness and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Is Jesus Good? Mr 10:18 He 4:14-15

Mark 10:18 NWT 2013
Jesus said to him: “Why do you call me good? Nobody is good except one, God.

Hebrews 4:14-15 NWT 2013
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold on to our public declaration of him.
15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tested in all respects as we have, but without sin.

Soul Sleep Lu 16:22-24, 23:42-43

Philippians 1:23 KJV
23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

Philippians 1:23 NWT 2013
23 I am torn between these two things, for I do desire the releasing and the being with Christ, which is, to be sure, far better.

Luke 16:22-24 NWT 2013
22 Now in the course of time, the beggar died and was carried off by the angels to Abraham’s side. “Also, the rich man died and was buried.
23 And in the Grave* he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and he saw Abraham from afar and Lazʹa·rus by his side.

24  So he called and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazʹa·rus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this blazing fire.’

Luke 23:42-43 NWT 2013
42 Then he said: “Jesus, remember me when you get into your Kingdom.”
43 And he said to him: “Truly I tell you today, you will be with me in Paradise.”

Eternal Lake of Fire Rev 14:9-11, 20:10,14-15

Revelation 14:9-11 NWT 2013
9  Another angel, a third, followed them, saying in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the wild beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand,
10 he will also drink of the wine of the anger of God that is poured out undiluted into the cup of His wrath, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the sight of the holy angels and in the sight of the Lamb.
11  And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever, and day and night they have no rest, those who worship the wild beast and its image and whoever receives the mark of its name.

Revelation 20:10,14-15 NWT 2013
10  And the Devil who was misleading them was hurled into the lake of fire and sulfur, where both the wild beast and the false prophet already were; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

14  And death and the Grave* were hurled into the lake of fire. This means the second death, the lake of fire.
15 Furthermore, whoever was not found written in the book of life was hurled into the lake of fire.
