The Value of Children (Mother's Day, Wife, Mother, Home-Keeping) | Victor Tey

1 Timothy 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

An unpopular truth: The will of God for a young woman is to seek to be a wife, mother and home-keeper. This is a statement of liberation, not oppression. There is nothing of greater value in this world than the children a mother has been entrusted with.

Mother’s Day

  1. Mother’s day is sometimes a sensitive time for some people
    1. Can’t have children
    2. Haven’t had a child yet
    3. Lost a child
    4. Lost a mother
    5. Compassion is necessary but this isn’t a reason to stop others from celebrating or honouring their mothers
    6. People who are critical of “Mother’s Day” sermons / gifts
    7. It’s fine to have an opinion, but that doesn’t mean the world must revolve around your emotions
    8. This is the world we get when we start to think the world has to serve us rather than what we can do to serve others.

The Will of God for a Woman

1 Timothy 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

This is not a popular verse.

  1. What is the will of God for a woman?
    1. Seek to be a wife, mother and homekeeper (Titus 2:5)
    2. Doesn’t mean you can’t earn an income, but it may restrict the types of work you do (husband and home comes 1st)
    3. It’s about priorities and responsibilities
    4. Be a mother to your children, not your husband. Be a wife to your husband.
      1. How do you treat him?
      2. How do you talk to him?
      3. Do you respect his authority to make decisions or are you constantly undermining him?
    5. Is this just talking about widows? Why would being married previously alter God’s will for a woman?
      1. Compare to Titus 2:4-5 – love husbands, love children
      2. 1 Timothy 5:10 – if she have brought up children
    6. Exception are those who have the gift to not burn with lust and can remain pure in mind and unmarried.
  2. Two aspects (after marriage) in this verse
    1. Bear children – Becoming a mother (ie. having children)
    2. Guide the house – Being a mother (your responsibilities)
  3. Both of these aspects are under attack today
    1. Satan doesn’t need to kill christians if he can convince them not to be fruitful and multiply
      1. They will kill themselves off
      2. Overpopulation is a myth – VIDEO
    2. Satan doesn’t need to kill christians if he can raise and train their children
      1. Deuteronomy 4:5-10 – importance of teaching your children
      2. What use is a perfect word when it’s unknown – Satan knows this.

The Value of Children

  1. When women think of motherhood, they see it as something they’d like to do, not as something they strive to be.
    1. “Just a housewife”
    2. Oxy-moron even to the world’s standard because most people know how difficult it is.
    3. That’s why they don’t have lots of children, and when they do have children they put them into daycare.
    4. Also due to the positive parenting phenomenon which has made parenting harder for people with more children.
    5. “Just” is because it’s a payless job.
    6. Do we get our self-worth from only financial measures?
    7. “My children don’t let me accomplish anything” – taking care of your children is the accomplishment
  2. The Value of Life
    1. Mark 8:36-37 – gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
    2. A soul is the most valuable thing you can be responsible for in your life.
    3. This applies to men also but more-so to women since they are seeing the children all the time, there’s a tendency for them to value them less just because of the familiarity.
    4. Children are valuable, but you need to hear that sometimes because it’s so easy to forget.
  3. Example of an Account Manager
    1. Often the seniority of an Account Manager is the value of the portfolio they manage.
    2. Neglecting their most valuable customers for the ones that spend nothing is like a mother that neglects her children to work a job or run a business
  4. 1 Timothy 5:11-14 is actually liberation from vain things, not oppression from things of “real value”.
    1. I think of the Gen Y “foodies” in their “meetings” with their social media

  3. Psalm 127:3-5 – reward, happy is the man
  4. Deuteronomy 28:1-4 – blessed shall be the fruit of thy body
